[AN INTER - STATE MULTIPURPOSE PROJECT]

TUNGABHADRA DAM

The Tungabhadra Project, a multipurpose river valley project for sustainable development of water resources of the inter-state river Tungabhadra, consist of a medium sized masonry dam of the straight gravity type, irrigation canal systems and hydropower houses constructed as a joint
venture of the then States of Madras and Hyderbad for providing irrigation facilities to 3.5 Lakh hectares in Raichur and Bellary Districts of the State of Karnataka and 1.46 Lakh hectares in Kurnool, Cuddapah and Anantapur and Dist of the State of Andhra Pradesh. The project was taken up in the year 1945 and completed in 1953 at a cost of Rs. 130.76 crores. Water was first released for irrigation during the year 1953. Besides irrigation, facilities for generating hydro power to the extent of 99. MW were installed. The right Bank High Level Canal Scheme [Stage 1 & 2] completed in 1966 brought relief to the chronic famine sticken zones of Rayalseema and brought to reality the ardent wish and hope of million of people.

Tungabhadra Board

Due to the formation of the State of Andhra on 1st Oct 1953 the Tungabhadra Board was formed as per the Govt. of India notification dated 29th Sep, 1953 under Andhra State Act and reconstituted as per Govt. of India notification dated 10th March 1955. The Tungabhadra Board is headed by Chairman nominated by Govt. of India with members form both the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and a Member [Finance] form the Government of India. A Full time Secretary is stationed at Tungabhadra Dam for efficient performance of the Board's functions.

The Tungabhadra Board is incharge of the maintenance and operation of Tungabhadra Reservoir, Dam, Power Houses and Canals common for both the States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on right bank of the Tungabhadra river. The Board is responsible for distribution of water between the two states as per the stipulations in the award of the Krishna water Disputes Tribunal [KWDT].

The KWDT award provided water allocation in the Tungabhadra Sub-basin to the States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as under

WATER REGULATION

The working tables for utilization of the waters in the Tungabhadra Reservoir are prepared by the Tungabhadra Board so as to enable the States of Karnataka and AP to utilize the water available for utilization in the Reservoir in the manner indicated above.

The Tungabhadra Board is incharge of operation and maintiannce of the canal system of Right Low Level Canal upto 250.80km including 11 common distributiories to a length of about 90km and Right Bank High Level Canal upto 105.430km. The operation and maintainance of Left Bank Main Canal. Left Bank High Level Canal including their head regulators and the Raya and Basavanna Channel) is entirely under the control of irrigation Department of Government of Karnataka.

Water is released by Tungabhadra Board to different Canal System of Right Bank Low Level Canal and Right Bank High Level Canal and into the river for asisitance to Vijayanagar Channel System, Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme and Kurnool Cuddapah Canal as requisitioned by the irrigation Departments of both the states.

The Reservoir water account and accounts of releases of water to both the States under various canal systems are maintained 10 day wise by Tungabhadra Board and communicated promptly to all the concerned in both the States and to the Central Government. The equitable distribution of water as per the award of the KWDT between the States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh is thus ensured.

The Right Bank Low Level Canal with a designed capacity of 1800 cusecs at head provides irrigation for an area of 37,503 ha (92.674 acres) in the Bellary Dist. Of Karnataka and 63,522 ha (156963 acres) in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh.

The Right Bank High Level Canal with a designed capacity of 4000 cusecs at head provides irrigation for an area of 80908 ha (199843 acres) in the Bellary District of Karnataka and 76397 ha (188777 acres) in Andhra Pradesh.

The Tungabhadra Board releases water on Right Bank through 96 nos off take points on Power Canal and Right Bank Low Level Canal upto the limit of the Board. The regulation of water in the distributaries beyond the off-take pints and utilization for the ayacut is the responsibility of the Irrigation Department of the respective States.

HYDRO ELECTRIC SCHEME

The Hydro Electric Scheme under Tungabhadra Project consists of three Power Houses.

* At the foot of the Dam on the right bank with an installed capacity of 36MW
* At the foot of the Dam on the left Bank with an installed capacity of 27 MW
* Near Hampi at 22 km of Power Canal with an installed capacity of 36 MW.

The Tungabhadra Board operates and maintains the Power Houses on the right Bank of the river i.e., one at Dam Site and the other near Hampi. The Power House on the left bank is under control of the Viswesaraiah Viduth Nigama Limited of the State of Karnataka. The electricity generated by the right bank power Houses is shared between the States of Karnataka and AP in the ratio of 20:80

GARDENS

Tungabhadra Board maintains a number of parks, gardens, woodlots, a deer park and an aviary near Dam which attract lakhs of tourists every year. The gardens are located in teraraces to retain the aesthetics and natural slopes and are fitted with beautiful foundations and coloured lights. During national holidays and festival days the parks are specially illuminated. Circular park [Chakravana], Trigangular park [Thriveni Park], High Level Canal Inaguration Park, Jaapanese Park, Children Park and Nandanavana [Terrace Garden] are some of the parks maintained near the Dam. Apart from the Tungabhadra Board is collecting various species of plants for the development of a Botanical Garden.

FISHERIES

The Tungabhadra Reservoir with a water spread area of 378 sq. km affords tremendous scope for development of fisheries. The Tungabhadra Board established a major carp seed production farm at Dam site in the year 1963. A Jar Hatchery, the first of its kind in Karnataka was added in the year 1982 for increasing major carp Fish seed production. The Tungabhadra Fish Farm is meeting the fish seed demand of the participating states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in addition to its stocking of residual seeds in the reservoir for development of fisheries. The Tungabhadra Board also offers services in fisheries to meet the major Carp Fish Seed requirement, supplies quality ice for refriegeration in all seasons and cold storage facilities for preservation of fish. The Tungabhadra Board is running a Fish Net Making Plant which produces and supplies quality nylon twines and nylon nets [knotted and knotless] with an annual production of about 40 tonnes.

TUNGABHADRA MULTIMEDIA THEATRE CHAITANYA

A multimedia theatre named "Chaitanya" was inaugurated on 13th Aug 1999, with a seting capacity of 50, equipped with the state of art Technology [Multi track audio system and multi media based projection technology) to disseminate information on Tungabhadra Project, inter state co-operation for harnessing water resources, water resources management, etc., for creation of mass awareness. This was taken up at a cost of Rs. 33 Lakh with the Central Government providing Rs. 20.63 Lakh.

THE AQUARIUM - PARNAJA

An Aquarium christened as "Parnaja" was built Tungabhadra at a cost of Rs. 45 Lakhs and inaugurated on 13th Aug 1999. About 4 Lakh persons from the neighbouring districts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh visit the Tungabhadra Dam every year. The aquarium with about 65 varieties of cultivable, indigenous and ornamental fish provides latest information on the aquatic life to the inquisitive mind. The aquarium is constructed as a thematic building and equipped with modern aeration and filtration system to maintain good hygiene.

Computerized musical Dancing fountain :

A Musical Dancing fountain is provided in Tungabhadra Dam Garden using state of art technology at a cost of Rs 11.70 Lakhs. Music, Light and Dancing Water Create an Illusion of group dance to the delight of the children and elders alike.

Budjet and Sharing of Expenditure :

The budjet of Tungabhadra Board is provided by the Government of Andrapradesh and the expenditure is shared by andra Pradesh and Karnataka, with necessary adjustments done by the account Generals of Both the states.
